Saturday Morning in the Graveyard

SATURDAY MAY 30, 2020
7:50AM – 8:00AM – Thomas & Dabney Meditation
Sit on the grass, close your eyes, listen, breathe and connect to this enduring friendship that started the Monticello Graveyard. Towels to sit on provided.
 
8:00AM – 10:00AM - Graveyard Cleaning 
No Cost • Drinking Water and water for cleaning monuments will be provided.
The annual graveyard clean-up is a great way to visit, learn about and help maintain the Graveyard. Bring soft nylon brushes.

8:15AM – 8:30AM –Monticello Association/Thomas Jefferson Foundation Collaborative Brick Walkway Tour No Cost • Join Cousin Rob Eppes and Gardiner Hallock from Thomas Jefferson Foundation to learn about the newly expanded Visitor walkway.

Morning Workshop Option 1

10:45AM – 11:15AM – “Thomas Jefferson:  A Day at Monticello”   Children’s Book Author Presentation

No Cost • Elizabeth Chew (Author, Chief Curator at James Madison’s Montpelier) shares her experience of researching and writing a children’s book that tells the story of a day at Monticello, in part, through the eyes of Mr. Jefferson’s grandson, Francis Eppes.

No Cost • Immediately follows “A Day at Monticello” presentation. (Optional book order via Monticello Association @ $15).

12:20PM – 1:30PM – Monticello Highlights and Griffin Discovery Room
No Cost • Children explore reproduction elements such as Mr. Jefferson’s alcove bed, the Houdon bust, nail making shop and slave dwelling. Includes film, period games and self-directed activities, ideal for ages 6-12.


11:30AM – 1:30PM – Jefferson and DuPont and Graveyard History - Woodland Pavilion

$20 • Lunch buffet session includes Hagley Museum & Library Executive Director David Cole’s discussion on Mr. Jefferson’s relationship with P.S. du Pont; followed by Monticello Associate Guide Bill Bergen’s presentation on the history of the Monticello Graveyard.

Saturday Afternoon 

2:00PM – 3:00PM – Tufton Farm Tour
No Cost • Discover one of Mr. Jefferson’s quarter farms that borders Monticello.
Food grown here is sourced and served by Monticello’s Farm Table Café.


Evening Reception and Monticello House Tours

5:30 – 7:50PM - Shuttles leave from the Visitor’s Center
Costs• $45 for adults, 21 & over (includes 2 beer/wine tickets. Cash bar after first 2 drinks),
$38  for adults and children 16 and up, soft drinks only,
$15 for children ages 7-15, 6 and under, free. 

Walk through tours of Monticello will be available from 6:30 – 7:50.  

Our reception menu this year includes beloved ham biscuits, meatballs and other delicious nibbles. Dinner is on your own.

Sunday ~ Graveyard Dedication Ceremony and Business Meeting

9:30AM – 9:50AM - Visiting Family Graves
No Cost • You may bring cut flowers (no pots or vases please) for placing on your loved ones graves (or order them via MA @ $15/bunch)
 
10:00AM – 10:55AM Graveyard Enclosure Dedication Celebration and Memorial Ceremony 
No Cost • Flowers will be provided for children to place on Mr. Jefferson’s grave. Children will cut a ceremonial ribbon. Featuring fun/patriotic/ inspirational music.
 
11:15AM – 11:40AM – Southern Buffet at Montalto                   
$15 • So many shared their fond memories that we are bringing Michie Tavern fare (Fried & Baked Chicken meals) to Montalto, with vegetarian options from Monticello’s Farm Table Cafe. 

11:40AM – 12:20PM – “Confounding Father: Thomas Jefferson’s Image in His Own Time” Author Luncheon Presentation 
Enjoy West Point Professor/Author/Scholar Robert McDonald’s presentation followed by Q&A from 12:20PM to 12:30PM. 

12:30PM – 1:30PM Annual Business Meeting - Open to current members and immediate family only.
