MINUTES OF THE ANNUAL MEETING
OF
THE MONTlCELLO ASSOCIATION
MAY 7, 1971

Members and Guests gathered in the Graveyard at Monticello at 11:15 A.M. for the annual ceremony of decorating the graves. president George Green Shackelford read a brief service and prayer. All small children present decorated Mr. .Jefferson's grave with loose garden flowers.

The members proceeded to the Keswick Hunt Club for the Annual Meeting.

After a luncheon, arranged by Anne Barnes, the Hostess, the President called the meeting to order.

It was moved and passed to dispense with the reading of the minutes of the last Annual Meeting as they will be printed in the 1971 Annual Report.

The President called upon Mr. Harold Coolidge to present a matter which he (Mr. Coolidge), wished to be discussed and acted upon by the Association, i.e. taking the initiative in the significant role of Mr. Jefferson as a Conservationist. Mr. Coolidge outlined his own experience in the field which includes serving as the first American President of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (I U C N), an office which he will hold until its 1972 meeting in Canada. He mentioned the growing surge of interest in the youth of the world in promoting positive action to help safeguard our natural environment by controlling pollution and reassessing our values. He then submitted the following proposal: 1) that this Association consider plans for joining in sponsoring a Colloquium to celebrate Mr. Jefferson's role as a conservationist in cooperation with his University and the Monticello Foundation (including youth in such planning), 2. That the Monticello Association become an associate member of the I U C N at the cost of $50.00 a year. Olivia Taylor moved that: The President appoint the chairman of a committee to investigate the proposals made by Harold Coolidge: to serve on Colloquium on Mr. Jefferson's role as a conservationist and to join the I U C N. The motion was seconded. Robert Kean indicated his agreement but urged that the committee remember that the principal concern of the Association was the care of the Graveyard. John Taylor suggested that the discussion be referred to New Business.

The Executive Committee made the decision to have the books of the Association audited. This was done by Dulaney-Salley Co., Certified Public Accountants of Charlottesville for the two periods: June I, 1969-May 31, 1970 and May 31, 1970-December 31, 1970. The audit was completed in January and the books found in order. The auditor also gave helpful suggestions for keeping the accounts of the Association.

SECRETARY'S REPORT

The Annual Report for 1970, now at the printers, will be out this summer. Attention is called to the article which is the consolidation of two articles by Jefferson Randolph Anderson: "Tuckahoe and the Tuckahoe Randolphs". These articles were originally published in the 1936 and 1937 Annual Reports and contain genealogical data not available in other sources.

Olivia Taylor reported that work would start on updating the Records of Mr. Jefferson's descendants.

THE CUSTODIAN'S REPORT

Jane Rotch reported that there had been one interment in this past year: that of George William Wiley, husband of Katharine Hutchens Wiley who died April 1, 1970. She also reported that progress was being made on the repair of the old slate stones.

Tribute was paid to the hostess, Anne Barnes for the excellent arrangements for the Annual Meeting.

The following were elected as Associate Members of the Association:

Dr. Albert Dworkin
Mrs. Jefferson Randolph Kean, II
Mrs. A. Slater Lamond, Jr.
Mrs. Francis Meriwether Truscott
Mrs. Remus S. Turner, Jr.

THE PRESIDENT'S REPORT

George Green Shackelford announced that a committee for the revision of the Constitution and By-Laws would be appointed. He also announced that the idea of a Thomas Jefferson Award, previously discussed, had been abandoned as the membership had failed to show interest in such an award. He then reported on his activities, as President of the Association, for the past year.

1. He attended a function at the Governor's Mansion in Richmond on an invitation from Governor and Mrs. Lynwood Holton.

2. He attended the Founder's Day Exercises at the University of Virginia as a guest of President Shannon. He also reported that the Association was represented by Mrs. Rotch at the ceremonies at the Graveyard to celebrate Mr. Jefferson's birthday.

After the President's report discussion was resumed on Harold Coolidge's suggestion made at the beginning of the meeting, Olivia Taylor, on request, restated her motion. It was moved and passed that the President, with the advice of the Executive Committee, appoint a committee to investigate the matter.

Thomas J. Randolph V expressed concern at the amount of money being spent by the Association and called attention to the fact that, for the past several years, there have been no funds accumulated to meet future extraordinary expenses. There was some discussion on this point. The prevailing opinion was that most of the expenses were vital to the operation of the Association.

Bolling Hubard presented the budget for the fiscal period of June I, 1971 to December 31, 1971 and ,January I, 1972 to December 31, 1972. The budget was accepted.

The following officers were elected for the coming year:

President Olivia A. Taylor
Vice President: Frank S. Walker, Jr.
Historian: Madeline McMurdo Whitmore
Secretary-Treasurer: Mary Walker Randolph

The meeting was adjourned.

Respectfully submitted,
MARY WALKER RANDOLPH
Secretary-Treasurer

Date: May 7, 1971
